Economic Development Director Profile

The City of Montgomery, Alabama is seeking a Director of Economic Development. Reporting to the Mayor, the Director serves as an expert advisor to the Mayor and City Council on all matters relating to economic development citywide. The Director is responsible for the management and oversight of the Departments of Community Development, Planning and Inspections. The Economic Development Department ensures that Montgomery has a strong and diverse economy by promoting long-term economic growth through the revitalization of downtown, urban, and targeted suburban areas; increasing Montgomery’s tax base; providing technical and targeted financial assistance for business; preparing the workforce to meet the demands of current and emerging industries; and promoting cultural development through planning, partnerships, and related activities.

The Director is responsible for leading the creation and implementation of an economic development master plan to strategically position the City as a catalyst for tourism, innovation, entertainment, residential and retail activities. Working collaboratively with strategic partners at the local, state and national levels, the Director is tasked with spurring  job growth and development in the City with a focus on underrepresented communities, distressed business corridors, and small businesses. The Director will leverage public-private partnerships and business development incentives to achieve the City’s economic development vision.


The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in business administration, urban planning, economics, public administration or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in the field of economic development including participating in and/or negotiating significant public-private redevelopment projects. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated supervisory experience, preferably within a municipal government. A Certified Economic Development Director (CEcD) certificate by the International Economic Development Council, or successful completion of IEDC core courses is preferred.
