About the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) is a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding of the significance of civil rights developments in Birmingham – particularly the 1963 Birmingham Campaign and the Children’s Crusade. BCRI is part of the Birmingham Civil Rights District and the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

Founded in 1992, BCRI reaches more than 150,000 individuals each year through award-winning programs and services.

BCRI is governed by a 22-member Board of Directors and is affiliated with the following institutions, agencies, and associations:

  • Soaring Beyond Expectations, 21st Century Community Learning Centers
  • National Park Service
  • Smithsonian
  • American Alliance of Museums
  • Alabama African American Civil Rights Heritage Sites Consortium

Ten permanent exhibits, a variety of traveling exhibits, a range of community events, an extensive archives, and education projects for visitors of all ages all support BCRI’s mission to enlighten each generation about civil and human rights by exploring our common past and working together in the present to build a better future.

The Archives of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute collects, houses and makes accessible records and documents relating to events that occurred during the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s in the city of Birmingham and across the United States.

In addition, the BCRI Archives is also a collection of records and documents on the global scope of the movement for human rights. The Institute’s collection is especially useful as a resource for scholars and other professionals working in the area of global civil and human rights.

The Archives of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is responsible for selecting the materials for inclusion in the collection, appraisal of potential value of that material, processing materials collected, and providing general public accessibility to all collections.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute…acknowledges that where once the city housed two people, Black and White, unknown to one another except through the painful thread of segregation, Birmingham now embraces its past, neither forgetting nor dwelling on it, but using it to foster understanding.
