Michael McKinney
Executive Director
Piedmont Business Capital

The journey of Piedmont Business Capital (PBC) – a Community Development Financial Institution – is rich in history with organizational and strategic milestones that map to some of the country’s biggest societal events. Reorganizing from Greensboro Venture Capital Fund in 1992 to Greensboro Community Development Fund in 2011 to Piedmont Business Capital in 2016, PBC in all of its incarnations has delivered on a promise to catalyze businesses in ways that contribute to the economic success of often-overlooked communities of color in the Greensboro and Winston-Salem regions of North Carolina.

The executive of an organization like PBC had to be not only a proven administrator but also a leader with deep roots in finance along with an ability to deeply connect with community around a powerful mission. PBC partnered with POLIHIRE in March 2023 to find this rare leader, and in August, Michael McKinney was named PBC’s new Executive Director.

Michael’s bona fides in leveraging resources to support thriving communities were evident from his roles as Executive Director of both Piedmont Triad Apartment Association and the North Carolina Realtors Housing Foundation. Part of what makes Michael a particularly strong leader in this space, however, is the set of skills and experiences he brings to nonprofit leadership from over two decades in the banking sector. PBC Board Chair Karl Robinson summed it up best when expressing his excitement about Michael and describing him as a “socially conscious leader with in-depth financial and nonprofit expertise.”
